About us

Who we are

The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, German Academic Exchange Service) is the world’s largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers.

100 Years DAAD – 100 Years Change by Exchange

Since it was founded in 1925, around 3 million scholars in Germany and abroad have received DAAD funding. It is a registered association, and its members are German institutions of higher education and student bodies.

What we do

The DAAD’s activities go far beyond simply awarding grants and scholarships. It supports the internationalisation of German universities and research organisations, promotes German studies and the German language abroad, supports countries in the Global South in building and improving their higher education systems and advises decision makers on education, foreign science and development policy.

The DAAD is also the National Agency for EU Higher Education Cooperation.

Promoting the Sustainable Development Goals

The DAAD is contributing to overcoming global challenges – in accordance with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals – together with German universities and their international partners by promoting international cooperation worldwide.

To support sustainable development, the DAAD offers both scholarships for studies – in Germany and within home regions – and university cooperation programmes. The programmes mainly enhance human capacity, further quality and relevance of learning, and contribute to solving global challenges.

Where we are

The DAAD’s head office is in Bonn, Germany, but it also has an office in Germanys capital Berlin and maintains a worldwide network of regional offices and information centres.

In Africa, the DAAD runs regional offices in Egypt, Ghana and Kenya, and information centres in Ethiopia, Cameroon and South Africa.
